Dear Parents: A Letter From Your Child’s Therapist

Dear Parents,

I know that having your child start pediatric therapy can come with a wide array of emotions.  But can I please just start by saying “thank you”? I am genuinely grateful to have this opportunity to work with your child and build a collaborative relationship with your family.  This isn’t a traditional medical relationship; no sterile doctor’s offices, no stuffy waiting rooms. Instead, you have graciously invited me into your home and I’m honored to get to spend this time with your child.

I need you to know that your child is so much more than a diagnosis to me.  Yes, a diagnosis can be truly helpful for qualifying for services, collaborating with an array of medical professionals, and following some best practices guidelines for how we can optimally help your child. I work tirelessly to help you find an accurate diagnosis and chart everything accordingly.  That being said, I also deeply care about your child’s favorite color, which Paw Patrol character they think is the coolest, which animal they love most at the zoo, and what their second favorite food is!  My clients are the silliest and make me laugh on a daily basis. But building sweet and trusting relationships with them is the absolute defining reason why I do the work that I do.

While it may just look like we are playing with toys, trust that foundational and meaningful work is taking place.  I vow to always keep this fun for your child so that they can have positive associations with the therapeutic process.

I can promise you that it gets better.  There will be hard days and I’m here as a sounding board for you.  But there will also be days where you see such growth, where your child effortlessly does things they have never done before!  The look of pure joy on their face when they feel confident about something new makes this all worth it. We will work together to identify what a “new normal” looks like for your family.  I’m so hopeful for all of your child’s unique potential!

I’m grateful to be on this journey with you.  Thank you for trusting me. Now, let’s watch your child blossom into the amazing person they are!

Sincerely,

Your Child’s Way to Grow Therapist
