Comprehensive evaluations | Parent Consultation | Services + Supports
At Way to Grow Pediatric Therapy, we are passionate about supporting every child’s learning journey, and our dyslexia services are designed to do just that. Through comprehensive evaluations and personalized ongoing support, our expert speech-language pathologists are here to help your child unlock their full potential in reading, writing, + beyond.
What is Dyslexia?… Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that affects the language areas of the brain making reading, writing, and spelling difficult. Contrary to popular belief, dyslexia is not simply seeing letters rearranged or backwards. In fact, it could look a lot different than that, depending on your child’s unique needs!
Signs an evaluation may be helpful:
Difficulty with recognizing and producing rhymes, remembering or following directions, confusing letters that have similar sounds, remembering common sight words, segmenting words into sounds, or blending sounds into words
Difficulty learning and remembering word structure (i.e. prefix, roots, and suffixes), maintaining an age-typical rate of reading, learning new information from text, or learning a new language
There is a family history of dyslexia
What we offer:
Comprehensive Evaluation
Understanding your child’s unique learning profile is the first step toward empowering them to succeed. Our dyslexia evaluations are thorough + tailored to each child’s unique needs, combining standardized assessments with in-depth observations to paint a complete picture of their strengths + challenges.
We offer comprehensive Dyslexia evaluations for children ages 7-18. These evaluations are completed over a 3-4 hour time period with several breaks offered throughout testing. The speech therapist uses four formalized assessment tools along with several informal measures to fully assess your child's strengths and weaknesses within the areas of reading, spelling, phonemic awareness, writing, comprehension, and additional language skills. During one of your child’s breaks, the speech therapist will complete a parent interview to gather information regarding your child’s medical background, strengths/weaknesses at school, and additional language/literacy information that will help gather a full picture of your child. Our compassionate speech-language pathologists ensure that the evaluation process is comfortable and engaging, setting the stage for a positive experience.
Parent Consultation
Once the evaluation is complete, we don’t just hand over a report—we partner with your family to create a personalized plan that meets your child where they are. A parent consultation will take place about 2 weeks after the evaluation to discuss your child’s report. The speech therapist will go over any diagnoses given along with recommendations and school accommodations deemed appropriate for your child. Beyond traditional therapy, our speech therapists foster confidence and independence, empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
Services + Supports
Learning doesn’t stop after the evaluation, and neither does our support. Our speech-language pathologists provide ongoing services tailored to your child’s evolving needs. We offer individualized therapy sessions that are interactive, fun, + designed to keep your child engaged. We also offer explicit, multi-sensory based programs for those who receive or already have a diagnosis of Dyslexia or are experiencing difficulty and frustration with reading. We offer two programs: Sounds Sensible and SPIRE.
Sounds Sensible:
An Orton Gillingham based literacy program that addresses phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, academic vocabulary, and handwriting. This program is great for 4-6 year olds who may be struggling with learning the letters in the alphabet, the sounds letters make, and early phonemic awareness tasks such as rhyming and sound identification.
SPIRE:
SPIRE is an explicit, multisensory reading intervention based on Orton Gillingham and science of reading. This program is great for children 6 years and up who have some nice foundational literacy skills but continue to struggle with reading and spelling.
